As some of you may or may not know, I am in the process of applying for
San Diego State University's Single Subject Teaching Credential
program. I'm currently enrolled in a few prerequisite courses and I
have a project for one of them that requires a bit of help on your
part, if you can supply it.
One of the courses I am taking revolves around teaching students with
disabilities and special needs. For my project, I must interview the
parent of a child with disabilities or special need, record the
interview, and submit it along with a bit of a reflection about the
assignment. If anyone has a sibling with special needs or knows someone
with a special needs child and would not mind participating in a
30min-1hr long interview, please let me know! I am very flexible and
able to conduct the interview in person, by phone, or via email or
online messengers. My project is due next Wednesday, February 25, so I
would like to be able to interview the individual by Monday, Februrary
23 by the latest. If you may know someone who would be willing to help
me out, please comment on this post or send me an email at kleenerts@gmail.com with their information. I can send a
copy of the questions to you as well so that they have a chance to look
over everything before we speak.
Thanks so much in advance for all of your help. I really appreciate it!

Here's the deal.
I work for a company that mentors kids ages like 7-17 all with varying disabilities. The kid I work with is pretty normal, he just has bad ADD when he doesn't take his medicine. So depending on how severe you need the child to be you can ask his parents or see what kind of kids my work has. Also, my mom used to work at a middle school classroom with severely disabled kids so if you want to see if she can get you set up that is an option too.

My sister has cerebral palsy. I'd love to help you out, or if you'd like to talk to my dad or other family members, I'm sure they'd love to help you too. Let me know who you'd like to talk to!

Looks like chris and summer took care of this but my cousin is special needs (he's a little slow) and I'm sure my aunt or uncle would be willing to do the interview.

Thanks for the responses. I should be able to let both of you know very soon, probably tomorrow, what I decide to do. Thanks again!

I should have also mentioned that I'll need to speak to a parent who's student receives special education services at school. ideally i want to teach to high school students, so older students would be preferred, but i know i can't be picky at this point in the game. thanks again, though, to you all. i'll keep you posted!

Well my sister is 22 and grew up in the San Diego Schools special ed system. She went to Lindbergh-Schweitzer Elem School, which has a fantastic program, then to Hage in Mira Mesa, and then Scripps Ranch high in Scripps. She's now in an adult program, but she's definitely been through the whole system. :)

Summer,
Thanks for all of your help. If it's still possible, I'd really like to be able to interview one of your parents to talk about your sister's experience. I'm glad that she had such a good experience within the system, especially since I hear a lot of people usually don't. If you could just send me an email with some contact information, I'll send you a copy of the questions to pass along and can send a copy directly to one of your parents right away, just so they can see what exactly I'll be asking. You should probably give them a heads up, just in case. I don't want to surprise them by asking a ton of questions about their daughter :) I'll try and give them a call this weekend to either set up a place to meet or to have the interview over the phone. Thanks again!

Bummer I didn't see this earlier! My mom has worked with people with developmental disabilities for the SDPD for the last 18 years. As kind of a mediator between the disabled and our justice system (I'll spare the gruesome details). If you still have any questions I'm sure she'd love to help.

Thanks for the offer, but I actually got a chance to talk to Summer's dad about her sister and her experiences in education. I'm surprised at how many people responded and offered to help -- it's been great to see so much support!
