November 20, 2011

things are just starting

I made a song during the last Yelp hackathon, this is a longer version of that song. Not totally sure if I like it or if it is even good. The shorter version (which you can listen to here) had a live video to accompany it, which made it about 56 times more cool.

As you guys know, I know nothing about music. I just bought a 25 key keyboard and held down things that sounded good to my ear. I hope you like it!

Also, thanks Joe for forcing me to do this!

Man, this is why I miss making music with you. This song goes all sorts of places I wasn't expecting (and I mean that in the best way possible). I need you there to give me weird ideas that I wouldn't try by myself.

I thought it was great man, especially the end. The piano part fits really nicely with that cello. Nice job layering the track, too. I'm super jealous of the airy voices and the cello. It's like exactly what I've been looking for for months. What are you using?

Thanks for the kind words, Joe. You know they mean a lot!

I would be really interested to see what we would come up with if we worked on something together, considering we have both developed so much since the last time. Maybe when I am down there in December we can lock ourselves in my bedroom with some espresso?

Jesus man, I rewrote this comment like 10 times because every time it just sounded straight up dirty. Inappropriate, I am sorry.

ANYWAYS, as you might be able to tell from that feeble piano, I am still makin' do with Ableton Live. It worked out well for this project because I had a bunch of sounds and effects tied to pads and knobs on my keyboard for people to play/manipulate during Hackathon.

I guess I am pretty comfortable with it and my computer probably couldn't handle Logic. Also, that is like 25 gigs of space that I don't have. Do you like it? I used it once in college and was blown away by how real everything sounds. I guess that is what you get when you have 20 gigs of samples...

I am now debating whether or not I should bring my lil' baby to San Diego tomorrow...

So, gay sex this week?

Wow Jeff, I finally got around to listening to this and I am really impressed. I especially liked the part with the snaps starting around 2:45. It definitely does not sound like you are just toying with sounds that you find appealing. I would like to hear you build on that section a bit more; 15 seconds wasn't long enough for me to be able to really appreciate all the parts. But still, it sounds amazing.

Dude, thanks so much – I am glad you like it!

I know, I really wish that part could go somewhere longer but I a) just wanted to finish the song and b) couldn't really come up with something on the piano to carry it on.

Again, thanks for listening! <3
