So basically, an epic list of artists are making this soundtrack. Why doesn't this happen for other movies...

I guess the BEST MOVIE IN THE WORLD deserves the best artists.

I think I'm confused. Gina, what are these feelings?

Joseph Flores • September 21st 2009 • Reply
SERIOUSLY!!! this soundtrack is almost, ALMOST prompting me to see the movie. sadly, you know that they will just use like, 5 seconds of each song in the background of a car driving scene, or in completely misplaced scene where it makes no sense...

Okay, you thought playing 15 step while sliding down a banister was odd too?

Oh and I can just hear it now:

"there is this one really good band on the twilight soudndtrack.." Permanent linkage.

This doesn't happen for other movies because no other movies are as epic as those of the Twilight saga. It's okay to give in, Chris. What you are feeling is love.
Can we just all go see this together? I think you all would love them the same way you love the Fast and the Furious franchise--you love them because they're so terrible and then, the more you watch them, the closer the love and hate become until you can't distinguish one from the other anymore.
And Annie, we must be fair. "15 Step" played throughout the credits.

Doesn't make it right! Maybe if I didn't listen to Radiohead or any of the other bands it would be acceptable. I think we could all agree that we have our own ideas/Good mems! about the songs, and when they are shown in the movie, it is weakened and so poorly placed.

Oh! it's like when a book gets bent or ruined in someway by another person, like a brother, and replaced by a cheaper version of the book. Yes, it is still the same book, but it doesn't match the original design or Feeling you had with the previous one.

hahaha gina, you definitely made a valid point with the f&f franchise, and although i did love the original movie from the get go (more because of my brother and the mems), i knew that the sequels were going to be horrible, and thats why i loved them...

BUT, annie has a great point! this is totally different! they are taking the things that i love and giving them to people who won't even appreciate it!! i mean, it's good and all that they are exposing great music to more people, but do you really think they'll appreciate thom yorke's musical complexity or understand why pairing st. vincent and bon iver was genius? no! they will like the song because it was in that one scene where the vampires played baseball in the woods! i know its elitist of me saying that these people don't deserve this music, but ughhh... music is supposed to be appreciated, not just listened to, and i think thats what we always forget...

also, i'm sorry to start an argument with you again, gina, i really don't mean to, hahaha. again, i couldn't really care less about this whole thing, but it's fun in a way, i guess...

Yeah Gina, don't mean to pick on Twilight too much, I just needed to make the connection.

JOE, Completely agree about the st. vincent and bon iver pairing!!! ahhhh

If you love a song, it shouldn't matter what relationship others form with it.
It's not your music to share. It's Thom Yorke's and Muses' and Death Cab's; think about it this way: if it weren't for them sharing their music with the world, you would never have heard it. Popular culture isn't always necessarily negative.

I know you aren't trying to start trouble Joey Boy, neither am I. This is all out of love and idea-sharing!

Joseph Flores • September 22nd 2009 • Reply

yeah, i understand that, hence why i said "it's good and all...blah blah blah". if more people are being exposed to the music and getting a chance to hear it when they normally would not, then good for them! i'm glad more good music is getting out there!! and i'm also aware that is definitely not my music to share. but as a musician (and i know i'm not talking from much experience, but i think this may be a universal feeling) you want your audience to really connect with the music on a deeper level... whether it be the emotion put behind the words or the beauty of the sounds that you made by hand. this is something you created on your own because you felt it was important enough to share with others. (and i am talking about real music, not like, club hits or whatever...) i just think that its a real shame that a large part of the audience won't make that connection.

the only problem i see with popular culture is its painful superficiality...
let me put it this way, it's like my mom voting for sarah palin because she liked her glasses, or not liking barack obama because his middle name is "hussein". this is like, 90% of that audience. ya knowww??

also, in the future, could you pleeeaaaseee don't call me "joey boy". my mom calls me that and ughh, i hate it... however, thanks for being a good sport!

I guess it really just depends on what scale we value the most, emotion & meaning versus Cool! entertainment. Gina, you said it yourself, " I think you all would love them the same way you love the Fast and the Furious franchise"
So why should gooood thoughtful music be placed in the F&F franchise? They are both so cheap and misplaced. Yeah, they are just trying to be cool and hip, but I think the tweens would still eat it up if miley cyrus was on the soundtrack, especially if it is "played for five seconds in a car" or whatever.
There will be blood does it right, music for the film that play with the exact same emotion the scene does, heightening it even. No lyrics involved, no previous memories involved in the music, just freaking greatness. But with Twilight and Radiohead+ other bands, Something becomes nothing and all the intended meaning is lost and covered up by another attempt at the possibly, but probably not, same feelingkdldg.

annie, you are right on the money with the TWBB reference. also anything that jon brion touches, i fall in love with...

also, after thinking about it, it's entirely possible that everyone (or mostly everyone) on the soundtrack, knowing exactly what this type of movie this was, didn't put in as much effort into their song as they would say, in an album or something, and just made a song that sounded good and was catchy. i'm totally cool with that, and i totally understand. i also see that being the most likely possibility in this case, AND since it leaves us in the middle ground, i think this debate can be put to rest?? it was getting a little serious there...

Yeah, I was never that passionate about my argument actually; I see where you two are coming from. It's just that recently I've come into the train of thought that one is happier the less they let things bother them. In the past, something like this would have riled me up too. But now, I say, "does it really matter? Really?"
Just being zen or devil's advocate or something.
Anyway.
ARGUMENT CLOSED.

Dangit Gina, I have been meaning to close this argument since yesterday but it looks like you beat me to it.

My response would have been something like this:

"Wow, am I wrong for not caring about this? I would have imagined that I would be much more bothered by this than many people. They way I see it is, Twilight won't increase Radiohead's fan base by much. Why?
1) Radiohead is huge. It is more than likely that anyone who would be interested in them already knows who they are.
and 2) Music doesn't have a big impact on a lot of people. Did their fan base jump gigantically from having 15 Step on the first soundtrack? Did Sigur Ros' fan base grow for being in the Prince of Persia trailer (lol) how about Explosions in the Sky with Friday Night Lights? Even if these fan bases were to change, would we even know? I really don't think so...

But at the end of the day, as T.Yorke would say, 'it's just noise.'

But lol @ the tought of Radiohead shirts sold in Hot Topic next to Twilight shirts."

After reading this, though, it seems like the argument is not against a growing fan base but the feeling tied to the music. Even so, when you hear Sigur Ros do you think of Prince of Persia? Hell no, you think of driving in your van with your dad or driving back from downtown after going up on St. James or painting in your room.

Okay, I don't know what else.

hmm, I am not sure. I am meeting mark downtown around 6:30 probably. Then we are heading back to rancho so I can get clothes and stuff. We might actually be around La Mesa exactly at 8. My phone is dead though (I know, I know, don't tell hazz) so you are going to have to call Mark...
